Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ribeye steak thinly sliced
- 1/2 pear grated
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1 small onion grated or finely chopped
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice wine or mirin
- 1 tablespoon gochujang Korean red chili paste or to taste (optional)
- 2 green onions thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- Vegetable oil for grilling
Instructions
Prepare the Marinade:
- In a large bowl, combine the grated pear, minced garlic, chopped onion, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, rice wine, gochujang (if using), sliced green onions, and black pepper. Mix well to combine all the ingredients and create a smooth marinade.
Marinate the Beef:
- Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak to the marinade. Ensure each piece is well-coated with the marinade. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavours to meld and the meat to tenderize.
Prepare for Grilling:
- If you’re using a grill, preheat it to medium-high heat. If you’re cooking indoors, heat a grill pan or a heavy skillet over medium-high heat and lightly brush it with vegetable oil.
Grill the Bulgogi:
- Remove the beef from the marinade, shaking off any excess. Grill the beef in batches, laying the pieces flat on the grill or pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until the edges start to caramelize and the meat is cooked through.
Serve:
- Transfer the cooked Bulgogi to a serving platter. Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the top and serve immediately. Bulgogi is traditionally enjoyed with steamed rice and a variety of Korean side dishes (banchan).
