Chinese Curry Puffs – The Ultimate Flaky, Flavour-Packed Snack
If you’ve ever wandered into a Chinese bakery, you’ll know the magic I’m talking about. Rows of golden pastries, each one glistening with egg wash and sprinkled with sesame seeds… irresistible! And the best part? They’re far easier to make at home than you might think.
There’s something incredibly comforting about a warm, flaky pastry filled with fragrant curry. It’s the kind of snack that makes you pause for a moment, breathe in that rich aroma, and immediately reach for another. These Chinese Curry Puffs are my twist on a classic bakery favourite — beautifully golden on the outside, soft and flavourful on the inside, and absolutely perfect for using up leftover potatoes and veg.
Why Curry Puffs?
Curry puffs sit right at the intersection of comfort food and nostalgia. They’re the kind of bake that shows up at family gatherings, picnics, dim sum tables, and even in lunchboxes. In my family, anything wrapped in pastry was a guaranteed hit — especially if it was slightly spicy, savoury, and easy to eat with your hands.
This version keeps things simple, using ready-rolled puff pastry (a lifesaver in any kitchen), everyday spices, and whatever leftover vegetables you’ve got knocking around. It’s budget-friendly, quick to prepare, and relies entirely on pantry staples. Exactly how I like to cook.

What Makes These Chinese Curry Puffs So Good?
- Flaky pastry without the fuss — no need to make your own.
- A curry filling that’s rich, aromatic, and beautifully thick.
- Perfect for leftovers — potatoes, carrots, peas, onions… use what you’ve got.
- Baked, not fried, so they’re lighter but still satisfyingly crisp.
- Great for meal prep — they freeze and reheat brilliantly.
These are the kind of snacks you bake once and immediately wonder why you didn’t double the batch.
When to Serve Chinese Curry Puffs
Honestly? Anytime.
These little parcels are brilliant:
- As a snack or appetiser
- For lunchboxes
- At parties or gatherings
- With a cup of tea
- On-the-go during busy days
- As freezer-friendly grab-and-go bites
They’re also a great introduction to Chinese bakery-style cooking if you’re new to it — simple steps, big flavour payoff.

Tips for Perfect Curry Puffs
Add extra chilli if you want a spicy kick.
Cool the filling completely before adding it to the pastry — this keeps everything crisp.
Don’t overfill or the pastry may burst open during baking.
Use a sharp knife to cut even squares for neat, uniform puffs.
Egg wash twice for maximum golden shine.
