In the world of Chinese takeout, there are classics that have stood the test of time, tantalising taste buds and creating cherished memories. Kwoklyn’s OK Beef is one such dish, a timeless favourite that transcends borders and brings people together.

While OK Beef was crafted to suit Western palates, its appeal is universal. It has found a place on menus in Cantonese restaurants and takeaways worldwide. The fusion of flavorus and textures, combined with its quick preparation, make it an irresistible choice for both cooks and diners.

The heart of this dish lies in its rich sauce. A medley of ingredients, from light soy sauce to tomato ketchup, blends harmoniously to create a symphony of flavours. The addition of cornflour thickens the sauce, giving it that perfect, glossy consistency. It’s a testament to how a few pantry staples can transform into something truly extraordinary.
The preparation is simple and efficient, making it accessible even for those with busy schedules. The cornflour-coated beef is fried to golden perfection, creating a crispy, irresistible texture that contrasts beautifully with the luscious sauce. Sliced onions add a touch of sweetness and a bit of crunch.

OK Beef
Ingredients
- 340 g Beef thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup Cornflour
- 1 Egg Whisked
- 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
- 1 Onion Thinly sliced
Sauce Ingredients
- 250 ml Water
- 125 ml Tomato Ketchup
- 4 tbsp Brown Sauce A1 Sauce
- 100 g Brown Sugar
- 2 tsp Light Soy Sauce
- 1 tsp Five Spice
- 2 tsp Cornflour mixed with 4 tsp water to create a slurry
Instructions
Sauce Method
- Place all of the sauce ingredients (except the corn flour) into a wok. Heat gently and stir until sauce starts to boil. Lower heat and simmer for a few minutes. Add corn flour mixture to the sauce and stir until thickened, remove from heat and set to one side.
Frying the Beef
- Heat a large saucepan or high sided wok over a high heat and fill with oil. Oil should be deep enough so once the beef is added it can float in the oil. Heat to 180c. In a large bowl massage the egg into beef slices. Tip the corn flour on to a large plate and dredge the beef in the corn flour coating each piece. Bang off excess flour and carefully lower into the hot oil, cooking for 2 to 3 minutes, or until beef is golden brown and crispy. Transfer to a wire rack to drain or place on to kitchen roll.
Bringing the dish together
- In a non-stick wok add ½ tbsp. oil and fry the slices of onion until tender, add beef and the ok sauce. Mix thoroughly to coat each piece. Transfer to a serving plate and serve.
